When an engineer on one of my projects came up with an innovative application of technology to solve a seismic problem, he was tasked to find a peer reviewer for his work; to be paid for by the developer. I don’t know I’ve ever heard of that happening for an Architect; but it’s an intriguing idea: could Architects create a new business niche by doing plan review for Peers? What do you think?
UPDATE: AIA California Council is working on legislative action that would allow California Licensed Architects who prepare ‘exempt projects’ (single family residential new and remodel; and small tenant improvement work) to substitute Peer Review by another licensed professional for typical Building Department Plan Review
